Are High Thread Count Sheets Better?

    Tread count doesn’t mean quality!

A lot of people understand the concept of thread count. It’s the number of threads found in one inch of fabric.

So you take the warp threads and then the weft threads, add them together, and you’ve got the thread count.

But it’s almost meaningless and here’s why.

All cotton is not created equal!

Here’s a good analogy for you.

We’ve got a White Castle hamburger and we’ve got a Kobe beef hamburger. I think we can both agree that both are hamburgers, and both are beef. But there is a big difference in the quality and the price of the product.

The same is true with cotton.

Cotton is graded based upon a variety of different attributes. Some of them include color, tensile strength of the fiber, its length, its diameter. Just to name a few of them. There’s a number of other variables but those are some of the more important ones.

    Fiber Length in Sheets

Here’s a chart that demonstrates just fiber length:

    thread length chart

If you take a look at the short fibers, and than take a look at the long fibers, you’ll see the long fibers are literally double. They are a hundred percent longer. These are the fibers that produce these incredible, soft, luxurious sheets.

Egyptian cotton is considered some of the benchmark cottons. This is cotton that’s grown in Egypt. It’s a high quality species of cotton.

But Egyptian cotton itself comes in many grades.

When you see sheet sets that are claiming to be 100% cotton, it can be a low grade of cotton and it can contain as little as 10% Egyptian cotton and be called an Egyptian cotton product.

And the Department of Agriculture of Egypt says more Egyptian cotton is sold every year than it’s grown.

The best manufacturers pay about $20 a meter for their fabric. And a set of sheets is going to use somewhere between 7 and 8 meters of fabric.

They’ve got a $160 invested in their textile and they haven’t cut it, they haven’t sewn it, and they haven’t put it in a package, shipped it or pay duty on it.

So when you see these $60 sheet sets, you should instantly know what kind of grades of cotton are used.

    Trick Used by Sheet Manufacturers

Here is another trick that some manufacturers use.

They use low-grade cotton that’s very thin when spun. By doing this, they can put more threads into a smaller space.

Or, they can twist two threads together before weaving. Now they can claim double the thread count because they’ve fitted two threads in the place of one.

They can even twist four threads into just one big thread. This quadruples the thread count. But that doesn’t mean that the sheets are softer or stronger.
