In this article I have a review of the brand new Saatva Modern foam mattress..
If you’ve been shopping for a mattress online for a while, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of Saatva. They make many different mattresses, including some of my favorite hybrid beds.
But this one is their brand new take on an all foam mattress and here I’m going to have everything you need to know about it if you’re interested in it.
Stuff like what this mattress is made of, what it feels like to sleep on, how firm it is and which sleeper types is going to work for, how much it costs and who might want to get the Modern foam mattress.

Let’s quickly cover the policies you’re going to get with the Saatva Modern foam mattress. This is stuff like shipping, returns, trial periods and warranties.
Should you get this mattress, you’re going to get free shipping.
Most beds you buy online are going to ship to you inside of a box. But Saatva does things a bit differently and they offer a service called white glove delivery at no extra charge.
This means that a local delivery team is going to show up with the mattress full size and do all the setup for you, including taking away your old mattress if you want them to.
This is a pretty convenient service to have because you don’t have to do any of the heavy lifting yourself and oftentimes disposing of an old mattress can cost you a bit of money.
Once the mattress arrives at your door, that’s when your trial period of 180 nights kicks in. You have a pretty long chunk of time to really form an opinion on the mattress by sleeping on it in the comfort of your own bedroom.
If you decide you don’t like the mattress within that trial window, you do have an option to return it and get a refund. However Saatva will charge you a $99 transportation fee to return their mattress.
This is because they incurred a bit more of a cost in shipping the mattress to you. I doubt many people will be returning this mattress or else they couldn’t really afford to offer that service.
But if you do suffer from buyers remorse sometimes then you might want to look at a mattress brand that offers completely free returns.
If you wind up keeping the mattress though, the Saatva Modern foam mattress is backed with a 12 year warranty which is pretty atypical.
Let’s get into the more interesting stuff now, like what this mattress is actually made of.
Like I mentioned this is an all-foam mattress, meaning it doesn’t use any coils for its support base. It uses dense foam.
This means this bed is going to be more ideal for a medium petite size individual. If you are a heavier person I usually recommend getting a coil mattress for the added long term support and durability.
At the very bottom you have that dense support foam and then you have a one inch layer of transitional gel memory foam. This is there to add pressure relief and to make sure you don’t really feel the dense support foam underneath.
Above that you have the primary comfort layer, which is actually going to be a convoluted or egg crate foam. This is going to be two inches thick and it’s going to be a bit more responsive than the memory foam underneath.
Interestingly you have a very thin layer of latex foam in the center third of the mattress. I’ll talk about that a little bit more in a bit.
The whole thing is wrapped up in a nice breathable organic cotton cover.
On Saatva’s website they have this in their memory foam category with their Loom & Leaf mattress.
However I really wouldn’t describe the Modern foam mattress to have a memory foam feel. Since the memory foam layer is underneath another layer of foam and it’s a very thin layer of memory foam. That’s not really going to be the predominant feel of the bed.
It has more of a neutral foam feel that I do think most people should find pretty comfortable. But if memory foam is what you’re seeking, then this really isn’t it. I would recommend looking at the Loom & Leaf mattress first if that’s what you want.
That thin latex foam layer isn’t really going to affect the feel of the mattress. That’s really there to give this mattress more of a zone support design.
This basically means that the center third of the bed is going to be slightly firmer than the outer thirds, to provide you with a bit more support where you carry the majority of your body weight.
This is supposed to help keep your spine in a more neutral alignment when you’re sleeping in virtually any position
I do think it is a nice feature to have although if you do suffer from back pain this probably isn’t at the top of my list.
The overall feel of the Modern foam mattress is going to be more neutral not really memory foam.
Let’s move over to the firmness level of this bed.
Unlike a lot of other beds from Saatva, this bed only comes in one firmness option when you’re checking out.
Saatva describes this firmness level as around a medium firm and I would actually agree with that.
I have it at a medium firm on the firmness scale, which means it’s gonna be most ideal for back, stomach and combination sleepers.
I wouldn’t really recommend this mattress for strict side sleepers. In general side sleepers are looking for a softer mattress that helps cradle their pressure points like their hips and their shoulders.
Of course everyone’s preferences are different and firmness is fairly subjective based on your body weight. Either way I wouldn’t really recommend this mattress if you’re a strict side sleeper.
But for pretty much everyone else, you should be able to get by on it, especially if you’re back or stomach sleeper.
Let’s move over to a few considerations for couples if you are going to be sharing this mattress and you both can agree on the feel and the firmness.
You’re going to want to know about motion isolation, temperature regulation and edge support.
Considering it is an all foam bed that uses memory foam, you’re not going to be getting too much of that cross mattress motion when your partner tosses and turns at night.
The edge support on this one is also going to be pretty good, it’s not going to be as good as something like the Saatva Classic which is an innerspring mattress.
But I don’t really see any issues there.
When it comes to temperature regulation, on Saatva’s website they say this has dual phase cooling technology. I really don’t see that, although I do think this bed will sleep temperature neutral.
I don’t think you’ll be sleeping hot because of the mattress, but it’s not really going to actively cool you down.
Let’s talk about the pricing of the Modern foam mattress.
This bed is going to be the most affordable adult mattress from Saatva, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be cheap.
For a queen size you’re looking at about $1500 for the Saatva Modern foam, which definitely puts it in a more premium pricing tier for an all-foam mattress. Usually hybrids are around this price point.
However this does make the Modern foam mattress the most affordable bed from Saatva, which is a more noticeably luxurious brand.
That’s pretty much going to do it for this review.
Overall I do think this is a nice addition to the Saatva mattress lineup.
Again don’t be fooled by thinking this is a memory foam mattress. This is more of a neutral foam mattress.
If you’re looking for a more noticeably luxurious all-foam mattress that’s generally pretty comfortable, I think this mattress is going to be a solid choice.
