Bear vs Purple Mattress Comparison

In this article I have a mattress comparison between Purple and Bear.

These two brands are very popular online and if you’re trying to decide between the two it can be difficult to tell the real reasons you should get one bed over the other.

But lucky for you, that’s exactly what I’m going to be covering in this article.

I’m going to talk about how these beds are similar, which really isn’t much of anything significant, and then I’m going to talk about how they’re different and why you should get one over the other.

I’m going to be focusing on each brand’s flagship mattress. They do make other beds, but these two are the easiest to compare, because they are the most popular and they are the closest on price.

Let’s start off by covering the policies that these beds are going to come with. This is stuff like shipping, returns, trial periods and warranties.

If you decide to buy, you start with free bed-in-a-box or bed in a bag shipping. Whether it shows up in a bag or a box really doesn’t matter. The process is basically the same.

You just bring it inside, open it up, rip off the plastic and watch your new mattress inflate.

With these two beds, like pretty much every bed-in-a-box mattress, it can take a couple days for it to fully inflate and reaches proper firmness.

If you lay down on the mattress right after you unbox it, you might notice that you sink all the way down to the foundation. Don’t worry about it, it’s totally normal, just give it a couple days.

With both brands you get a 100 night trial period to really test out the mattress at home and form an opinion about it.

If you decide you don’t like it within that trial period, you can get a full refund and free returns. But if you wind up keeping the beds, you’re looking at a 10 year warranty with both.

That is all the policy stuff and this is really the only stuff these two beds have in common.

Let’s just start off talking about the Bear mattress and then get into Purple.

    Bear Mattress

The biggest thing you’re going to want to know about the Bear mattress is its construction and feel.

This is a 10 inch three layer foam mattress which is a very popular style of construction. Its primary comfort layer is actually going to be a fairly dense memory foam.

If you’re familiar with memory foam, this is probably what you expect it to feel like. You’re going to lay down on it, it’s going to feel pretty firm at first, and then you’re going to slowly start to sink into it.

It’s going to conform to your body’s shape pretty nicely. It’s not going to feel quite as dense as something like a Tempur-Pedic or maybe even a Nectar mattress, but it has more of that classic memory foam feel that a lot of sleepers out there are looking for.

Let’s move over to the subject of firmness when it comes to the Bear mattress. This is actually going to be somewhere between a medium and a medium firm.

It’s going to be fairly accommodating for all sleeper types, back, side, stomach and combination.

Although if you are a strict side sleeper, there’s a good chance you might be wanting something a bit softer than this.

Side sleepers in general prefer a softer mattress that helps cradle their pressure points like their hips and their shoulders.

I think you’ll be able to get by on the Bear mattress just fine if you are a side sleeper, but you just might want something a bit softer.

Keep in mind that firmness is a pretty subjective thing based on your body weight. I’m heavy so I generally feel beds to be a bit softer. If you’re a lighter individual, you’ll usually feel better to be a bit firmer.

So keep that in mind when you’re shopping for a mattress.

Let’s start talking about the pricing of the Bear mattress. This is one of the reasons it’s so popular because it’s very affordable.

For a queen size you’re looking at about a thousand bucks. However Bear will normally run pretty significant discounts on this mattress.

In fact right now you can actually get a queen size Bear mattress for only $750. And right now they’re also throwing in two free pillows.

So a pretty affordable price for a nice quality memory foam bed.

One last little ex factor I want to mention for the Bear mattress is something they talk about a lot on their website and that’s the fact that this bed features a Celliant cover.

This is supposed to have all kinds of benefits for you, like improving circulation while you sleep and just generally improving recovery times for athletes.

I can’t really test whether or not this stuff does what it says it does. I need a laboratory for that. But my friend does sleep on the Bear hybrid, which features the same type of cover and he swears there’s something to it.

I wouldn’t necessarily make this cover a main part of your buying decision, but if it’s something you’re interested in it’s pretty nice to have.

The construction and feel of Purple is going to be significantly different than Bear and significantly different than pretty much every other mattress you can buy online.

This is because Purple’s special top layer. The Purple grid is made from a very unique material called hyper-elastic polymer.

This stuff is really squishy and stretchy and it gives the Purple mattress a very unique gel like feel that is pretty much unlike anything you’ve ever tried on a mattress.

I actually sleep on a Purple mattress and i find it to be insanely comfortable. However it can be a bit divisive just because of how unique it is. It seems like half of people love it and half the people don’t.

but that is what the trial period is for, to really form an opinion about it.

The Purple grid is a very responsive material so it’s going to be a lot easier to rotate between sleeping positions if you are a combination sleeper, which is very unlike the memory foam you find on Bear.

Speaking of combination sleepers, the Purple mattress is going to be a great option for combo sleepers, not only due to the responsive nature of the Purple grid but because it is around a medium on the firmness scale, so it should work pretty well for pretty much all sleeper types.

You might want something softer, you might want something firmer, but a medium works generally well for most people.

When it comes to price, the original Purple mattress is going to be significantly more expensive than Bear.

A queen size costs about $1400, which that’s a pretty big price difference.

Purple is less consistent with their discounts than Bear is. They will usually offer cash discounts around major holidays, but more often they will throw in bundle deals, like you get sheets and pillows with a mattress purchase.

Either way Purple is going to be quite a bit more expensive than Bear in this comparison.

One last thing I should mention for Purple is that it’s a nice option for hot sleepers.

You’ll notice that the Purple grid has very little surface area so there’s a ton of room for airflow in this mattress. Plus that material just doesn’t really retain heat like some other foams can.

It’s not going to actively cool you down while you sleep, but it’s going to be one of the nicest temperature neutral beds you can buy online.

I’m not going to say the Bear mattress sleeps hot, but I will say the Purple mattress probably will sleep a little bit cooler.

That’s pretty much going to wrap up this comparison.

Like I mentioned at the top, there are not that many things these beds have in common. If you’re trying to decide between the two it should be a fairly easy decision.

The Bear mattress is just a solid affordable memory foam bed that should work for pretty much all sleepers.

The Purple mattress has that super unique feel, it’s really nice for hot sleepers. However it is going to be quite a bit more expensive.

If you know you dislike memory foam and you want something that’s going to be nice for combination sleepers, then maybe Purple’s the way to go.

But if you want to save money and you like memory foam, then Bear is an obvious choice.
